Complete pre-license education

The state of Louisiana requires future insurance agents to complete required hours of pre-license education. Otherwise, you cannot take an examination for certain lines of insurance.

You must complete the following hours for your desired insurance lines:

  • Life only (20 hours)
  • Health and accident only (20 hours)
  • Life, health and accident (40 hours)
  • Property only (20 hours)
  • Casualty only (20 hours)
  • Property and casualty (40 hours)
  • Personal lines (20 hours)
  • Title (20 hours)
  • Bail bonds (8 hours)

Note that you do not need to complete pre-license hours for industrial fire, surplus lines, title insurance or limited life, surety, credit, variable life and variable annuity, travel or specialty limited lines credit insurance.

The most important thing is to choose a state approved course, which will correspond with state standards and qualify you for your insurance license.

Pass the state insurance license exam

The next step is to take and successfully pass the Louisiana insurance license exam. You must take one exam for each line of insurance you want (one exam for combined lines as well).

To take the exam, you should register and schedule a sitting, which you can do here. The examination fee for combined lines of insurance is $65 (per attempt).

During the exam, you will take the test in the presence of a proctor. This information might be helpful for those, who experience anxiety as they can relax their nerves beforehand.

Background check and fingerprinting

The Louisiana Insurance Department requires applicants to provide their fingerprints, which will automatically start the background check process.

You will need to pay $58 for the service.
